Therapists, Veterinary Technicians, Physical
Therapist Assistants, and Occupational Therapists
who have successfully completed Introduction
to Canine Rehabilitation.
Course Description: Splinting and Bracing in Canine Rehabilitation provides students with a fundamental understanding of how splinting and bracing are used in canine rehabilitation. Options for immobilization, support, protection and assistance are introduced. Biomechanical and fitting principles are covered thoroughly, and students learn to identify the features and uses of various splints and braces. Participants get hands-on experience as they test materials and formulate custom splints for use on fellow classmates and canine patients alike.

Topics Covered Include:
- Pre-fabricated, custom-fitted, and custom-made prosthetic, orthotic, splinting and bracing devices
- Tools used in custom splinting with low-temperature thermoplastics
- Biomechanical and design principles involved in custom splinting
- Evaluation of the canine patient
- Choosing the most suitable device and setting goals
- Using low-temperature thermoplastic materials including splint fit, cosmesis and strapping options
- Problem-solving in splint design and modification
- Client education and patient compliance
